Small-Scale Solar Expansion for a More Sustainable Home in Northumberland

Client: Private Homeowner
Location: Northumberland
Project Type: Small In-Roof Solar PV Installation (Outhouse)
Overview
In Northumberland, a homeowner already invested in solar power decided to take the next step in their renewable energy journey. By adding a small, in-roof PV array to a nearby outhouse, they aimed to further improve the property’s energy self-sufficiency and reduce its overall carbon footprint.
To help realise this goal, the homeowner approached Geowarmth Heat Pumps Limited to design and install the new system — with a strong emphasis on clean aesthetics, seamless integration, and optimised use of available roof space.

The Solution
To complement the existing solar PV system on the main house, Geowarmth designed and installed a discreet yet effective solar array on the outhouse. The system includes:
• Solar PV Array:
The new system consists of 6 x 455W solar panels, installed using the GSE in-roof mounting system. This not only provides clean energy but also maintains a sleek, roof-integrated appearance, blending effortlessly with the building.
• Inverter:
A Solis 2kW inverter was selected to pair with the array — perfectly sized to convert energy efficiently from the additional panels, while also keeping the system simple and cost-effective.
• Location:
By mounting the panels on the outhouse roof, the new array works in harmony with the main system. This effectively increases the total solar generation capacity on the property without requiring significant structural changes.

Why This Approach?
Although the installation was relatively small in scale, it aligned perfectly with the homeowner’s long-term goal of reducing grid reliance and enhancing sustainability. The project demonstrates how even modest solar upgrades can contribute significantly to a home’s renewable energy mix.
Key Benefits of This Project:
✅ Scalable Sustainability:
Even small systems have a big impact. Every additional kilowatt of clean energy helps reduce fossil fuel dependence and lower energy bills.
✅ Flexible Integration:
Thanks to the GSE in-roof system, the panels sit flush with the roofline — offering a visually pleasing and space-efficient solution.
✅ Maximised Existing Infrastructure:
By extending the solar coverage to the outhouse, the homeowner has made smart use of previously unused roof space, enhancing their original renewable investment.
✅ No Job Too Small:
At Geowarmth, we believe that every step toward sustainability matters — whether it’s a full-system installation or just a few panels on a garage or outbuilding.

Customer Outcome
Now fully operational, the additional solar array silently contributes clean electricity to the home each day. It works seamlessly with the existing system, delivering ongoing value by cutting emissions, lowering electricity costs, and helping the household move even further off the grid.
