Ground Source Heat Pumps

Renewable heating and cooling from the ground

A ground source heat pump or geothermal heat pump is an electrically powered device that uses the earth’s natural storage of (mainly) solar heat and moves this to provide heating, hot water (or cooling) for buildings.  A heat pump can extract heat from ground water directly (open loop) or from the ground via collector pipes (closed loop).

Heat pump technology is well proven with components in a heat pump similar to a refrigerator.  For more information see our schematic of how a heat pump works.

Commercial applications of ground source heat pumps include district heating schemes for dwellings, offices, shops, schools, hospitals and public and community buildings.  Typical heating and cooling distribution sytems serviced by geothermal ground source heat pumps are underfloor heating, radiators, fan convectors, air handling units and chilled beams.

Closed loop ground collectors are most commonly specified and space constraints on commercial sites means boreholes are more often used. Where larger amounts of ground space are available, for example school playing fields, horizontal collectors can be utilised.

Geowarmth provide a full design and install service from desktop feasibility studies to measuring on site conductivity using needle probe measurements (for horizontal schemes) or thermal response tests (for vertical borehole schemes) to the installation and commissioning of the system.

Commercial geothermal heat pump installations can be standalone or provide part of the load by integrating with biomass or other boilers.

North East based Geowarmth have installed ground and water source heat pumps in a variety of commercial premises throughout the UK.  For examples of our work please refer to our commercial ground source heat pump case studies.
