Carbon neutral green energy in the North East

Carbon neutral status for an innovative green energy scheme at Northumberland village hall

Solar pv panels Tyne Valley Northumberland solar pv_array_Tyne_Valley_NorthumberlandA revolutionary carbon neutral village hall in Northumberland has it's green energy provided by Geowarmth. This village hall is located east of Hexham in the Tyne valley between Haltwistle and Haydon Bridge. It is the UK's only earth sheltered village hall and it is carbon neutral. The roof is grass seeded and insulation standards exceed current requirements.

Heating is by underfloor heating installed by North East based Geowarmth. An efficient Mitsubishi Ecodan air source heat pump provides the heating for the underfloor system. The electrical consumption of the heat pump is partly offset by the on site electricity generation from the solar photovoltaic (PV) panels mounted on the structural steelwork at the front of the building.

The south facing building benefits from a lot of natural light but the panels have been innovatively incorporated in to the building design and carefully positioned to reduce solar gain in to the building. Whilst shading on solar panels is unhelpful, shading provided by solar panels can be beneficial.

As with many North East projects Geowarmth chose Romag solar photovoltaic panels made locally in consett, County Durham. The Mitsubishi heat pump was also UK manufactured in Livingstone, Scotland.

Geowarmth have a wealth of experience of providing renewable low carbon green energy solutions to community projects. Visitor centres, schools, churches as well as village halls have all benefitted from Geowarmth renewables installations.
