Evacuated tube solar thermal system for new build junior school in Newcastle upon Tyne

commercial solar_thermal_School_180_tubes_pic2 commercial solar_thermal_School_180_tubes_pic1Having previously installed a solar photovoltaic array on the roof of the senior school, Geowarmth were the obvious choice to install an efficient evacuated tube solar system on the roof a new build junior school for Dame Allan's Schools in Newcastle upon Tyne.  The solar system comprises 180 high efficiency evacuated tubes mounted on a shallow pitched roof and a 1000 litre domestic hot water pre-heat cylinder.

The evacuated tubes use the direct flow principal which means the manifolds and tubes are hydraulically connected.  It makes these evacuated tubes very versatile.

They can be mounted in almost any orientation including laid flat.  These evacuated tubes were selected because of the shallow pitch of the roof.  Additionally the tubes can be individually turned towards the angle of incidence of the sun to further maximise their efficiency.  The size of this solar thermal array is around 13m x 2m and is providing the client with income from the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI).

This Newcastle school also benefits from a ground source heat pump installed by Geowarmth to provide the heat for the underfloor heating for which they also gain the RHI.  Geowarmth have been very active in the education sector and have solar thermal installations on schools in Durham, York, Northumberland and Cumbria.
